Community Homes for Children

Neighborhood family-like homes for children in long-term foster care – those who are unlikely to be adopted or reunited with their families

DHS data indicate that approximately 150 Marion, Polk and Yamhill County children are lingering in foster care with no hope of being reclaimed by their families and little hope of ever being adopted. Because of generous donors, 20 of these children slept in their own bed in their own home in their own community last night, and they know where they will go to school today.

The Community Homes for Children program was created to provide children living in long-term foster care a nurturing home to call their own. The first home was opened in Keizer in 1998. It has proven that this innovative model works.

With the support of major grants from Meyer Memorial Trust and the Salem Foundation Richard and Joanna Kreitzberg Fund, the new Highland Community Home for Children was opened in 2008. It became home to the five boys who had lived much of their young lives in the aging Grant Community Home for Children.
